Canon Point: Kingdom Hearts: 358/2 Days; Day 357

History:
I chose to link a fan shrine as opposed to a wiki, because the information at the shrine is more in depth than what is found at the wiki. However, if you prefer, Roxas's wiki page is here. There is also a handy reference day-counting chart for game events here (originally released in the game's Ultimania, which is basically a Word of God Game Bible complete with side info that didn't make it into the games). Have a bonus game script while we're at it.
Roxas-centric summary of Days | Day 358 | His Last Week
He also appears in Kingdom Hearts: Dream Drop Distance, but it's been debated as to whether or not one of those appearances was truly Roxas or just an illusion. That said, the shrine is out of date in regards to this, so please reference the section of his wiki page that covers it instead.

Personality:
Roxas first gives off the impression of being too serious for a kid his age. Though he sees the world in simple terms (for Roxas, it's either this or that, with little to no middle ground), he still questions everything around him, from the motives of those around him to what something is. It's not so much that he's curious and excited to learn about the world around him; he just doesn't know because he hasn't been alive for very long. When he asks a question, he expects the truth; honesty is of the utmost importance to Roxas. He doesn't understand why someone would lie, and as such, he always tells it how he sees it, making him straightforward and, at times, blunt and even tactless. He also expects people to answer him outright; sarcasm and metaphors tend to go over his head, though he's getting better at identifying them, and he thusly tends to take them literally.

He's not really a detail-oriented person, for though he may see the outline of the big picture, he has a tendency to miss subtle signs. Roxas is known to be slow to put the pieces together; even if he sees all there is to see, he doesn't necessarily connect the dots at the same pace of or in the same order as everyone else. (Sometimes he'll even connect different dots and draw a whole different picture that no one expected him to get. See: Roxas coming to the incorrect conclusion that he's a replica, like Xion, at the end of Days.) Add to this his lack of understanding of people and hearts (and emotions), and sometimes he doesn't understand things like why the Beast wanted to protect something or someone (what is love? baby don't hurt me don't hurt me no more).

Roxas is an intensely internally-driven person. He can be said to be introspective, but it's less that he examines his own thoughts and more that he just does a lot of thinking. He takes the things that he has learned and turns them over in his mind, reaching either questions that he cannot answer himself or answers that can be difficult to correct. He is independent in that he will come to his own conclusions and never take something someone tells him for granted; it isn't necessarily that he's a skeptic, just that he cannot stop from asking questions. But once he's made up his mind, there's no changing it, and he is not only stubborn, but action-driven. He will accomplish what he's set his mind to, come hell or high water. He is confident in his abilities, and this has led to arrogance during battle. Combine these things and you have a kid who is serious and persistent, never stopping until he is satisfied with the result.

The fundamental thing to remember when interacting with Roxas is to treat him the way you expect him to treat you. If you belittle him and his friends, he will rise up and fight back. He returns friendship with devotion and loyalty, and kindness with kindness, even going as far as to go out of his way to help someone he doesn't know very well just because they helped him out a few times (see: Tinkerbell in Neverland). He expects the same as well, for his friends to treat him like friends and for his enemies to treat him as an enemy. When people act outside of these simple boundaries, he becomes confused and upset.

He doesn't care what people think of him, whether they like or dislike him, but what he reacts strongly to is the way he is treated. He hates being underestimated and looked down upon. He's more than "just some kid" and he's not weak or stupid. It's not his fault he doesn't know something. He can quickly become defensive in situations where someone is being condescending to him. When he gets upset, he gets vocal, and whatever brain-mouth filter he has disappears, regardless of the consequences. When it comes to minor slights along these lines, he becomes sulky and complains about it constantly (if only inwardly at times).

He has something of inferiority complex; the suggestion that he (or any of his friends) is useless or of less value than anyone else will set him off, and he will not lie down and take it. He is a very firm believer in his own worth. He believes he has a right to exist, a right to know the truth, a right to be himself, a right to live -- he doesn't care what anyone else says or thinks. He may be a Nobody, but he knows what he goes through -- what he feels, what his friends feel -- is real, and this has led to a lot of confusion about what's so great about a heart, anyway, and why they need them in the first place.

If he ever loses this certainty, he'll lose the foundation of who he is. Without it, he would be completely lost and melancholy with nothing else to believe in. This is why he gets so defensive about it; it is vital to his sense of self-identity, and to have it challenged is to have it threatened. He knows what he's capable of, but when it comes to who he is, he's not so sure. Like a lot of teenagers, he's still trying to figure out who he is, and in the end, he needs validation of those around him... especially from his friends.

His friends are the key to his happiness. In their company, he relaxes and becomes more lighthearted. He starts acting like a regular kid again, teasing and joking around and laughing with them about nothing. If he could, he would be with them forever, and if anything, that's all he really wants: to be with his friends, everyone happy... a normal life, one outside of fighting for something he doesn't know anything about and for people he, in reality, barely even knows. He's more likely to be something of a homebody, to look after the people he knows and cares about, than to go gallivanting around the universe for fun.

In the end, his friends are also his ultimate weakness and downfall: they bring out the strongest emotions in him because they're so close to the core of who he is. They are under his skin and in his blood, so when something goes wrong, to say it affects him deeply would be an understatement. Anyone he considers a friend can rip him apart from the inside out. They are his true source of validation and safety; like Sora and Ventus before him, his friends are his home. His friends are his power.

Abilities:
Strengths:
Basics: Roxas is, like Sora, meant to be the quintessential fighter for the Kingdom Hearts franchise the Organization. He is capable in melee fighting and proficient with magic. These skills allow him to do well out "on the field" (read as: in different worlds battling Heartless). Also like Sora, Roxas's strength is in his combos; the longer the attack chain he can carry out on a target, the more damage he'll do. Roxas was also taught by the Organization to stay out of sight of the world natives, and because of this he's good at making himself unnoticed when he feels like it.

Keybearer: Roxas wields a weapon called a Keyblade, which is... what it sounds like. A giant key shaped like a sword. It has the ability to lock and unlock anything, acts as a conduit for the wielder's magic, and can take on many forms. He will on default be using the Keyblade in its natural state, which is called the Kingdom Key.

Keychains: Roxas used to be able to change his Keyblade by way of accessories called Keychains. These not only change the shape and color of his weapon, but also the abilities of it. There are some Keychains, for example, that would transform his Keyblade into one more suited for powerful physical attacks, and others that will boost the strength of his spells. Roxas has almost all Gear, but cannot unlock dual-wielding Oblivion and Oathkeeper due to canon point/Plot Reasons (see below). (His Kingdom Key operates as the Kingdom Key++.)

Magic: Roxas has been taught how to use a wide array of spells from the Kingdom Hearts universe. His spell list covers the three-stage branches of Fire, Blizzard, Thunder, Aero, and Cure.

Limit Break: When Roxas's health is dangerously low, he taps into a store of power that allows him to unleash an attack called his Limit Break. His is named Event Horizon. When he uses this ability, his Keyblade becomes one long bar of light, and he "rapidly darts around the field ... slashing away at enemies with great strength" (source).

Corridors of Darkness: The Organization taught Roxas how to utilize these tunnels through the Realm of Darkness to travel the distances between worlds. The black coat that he wears is more than just a symbol of the Organization, but it protects him from the Darkness in the corridors (as well as from detection through other Dark-related means). Travel through the corridors is faster than normal modes of transportation, ranging from walking to spaceships.

Maneuverability: Being a skilled combatant in a fantasy series, Roxas has a lot of skills that help him get around faster and do nifty tricks in combat. Some of this uses magic, some of it doesn't. Examples of this: Aerial Recovery, High Jump, Float, Glide, Haste, and Dodge Roll.

Weaknesses:
Melee Focus: Although he knows how to use magic and has all levels of spells at his disposal, I'm adopting a piece of canon from the manga series and saying that magic is not exactly his strong suit. He's better off using spells to supplement his melee attacks than relying on them solely. They lack the punch, duration, and range of the same spells coming from a more talented, experienced, or dedicated caster.

Magic Points: In the game mechanics of Kingdom Hearts: 358/2 Days, Roxas only has as many casts of a spell as he has prepared before he sets off on his mission. In the game mechanics of Kingdom Hearts II, Roxas has a MP bar, just like Sora does in Kingdom Hearts I and II. For the sake of simplicity in narrative, I'm ascribing to the MP bar idea. Either way, this translates into this: Roxas cannot cast an unlimited number of spells. He can only cast so many before he gets tired and needs to rest. The more powerful the spell, the more energy it takes to cast; so, Fira uses more MP than Fire, and Firaga uses more MP than Fira. Tying back into the first bullet point, Roxas does not have as much magical energy at his disposal as a more talented, experienced, or dedicated caster might have.

Samurai Template: I'm going to take a cue from a type of Lesser Nobody called Samurai, which are canonically linked to Roxas (the whys and hows for which aren't explained in canon). Samurai Nobodies have low defense, but high attack; though statistically according to 358/2 Days, Roxas has equal stats across the board, I'm going to say that Roxas may hit hard, but he also takes a lot more hits than he perhaps should. Basically, he doesn't put a whole lot of value on protecting himself from most incoming attacks.

Limit Break: His Limit Break may be very powerful, but he must be very weak in order to use it, and after he does so, he is exhausted. This is a dangerous state to be fighting in, even if it means he can unleash that amount of power. He can also only use this skill once per day because of the amount of energy it depletes, unless it is somehow replenished (such as thanks to an item called Limit Recharge).

Thinky Stuff: While the Organization also made an attempt to teach Roxas to be observant, that... didn't succeed as well. He might be able to eavesdrop without being noticed, but that doesn't mean he can take the pieces of information he hears and put it together into a cohesive picture very well. In addition, the Organization only taught him what they needed him to know. A lot of concepts and information that most people take for granted are lost on Roxas. It doesn't help that he has less than a year's worth of experience to be working with. He has a steep learning curve for catching up to kids "his age."

Corridor Usage: The Corridors of Darkness will fall under the "thirty yard diameter" rule, and thus won't be able to carry Roxas off-world.

Future Abilities:
There are more abilities that we see Roxas use later in the series that he does not have access to now. With time, a lot of training, and some specific circumstances, he might eventually unlock these abilities.

Dual-Wielding: One of Roxas' signatures in the series is his ability to wield two Keyblades at once. The reasons behind this capability are vague at best in canon, but this is how I'm going to play it: This is a latent ability, and one that may or may not come up in-game, heavily depending on circumstances and plot events. I could scream wax poetic on theories all day as to how, exactly, dual-wielding works, since we don't have Word of God on this yet, but I'll save it for if/when this ever comes up in-game, hopefully so I can settle details and come to a consensus with any castmates I may have.

From the Dark City: The abilities Roxas exhibits during his boss fight battle with Sora near the end of Kingdom Hearts II would require a great amount of training to access. These abilities can be found listed here. (Note: The ability Thirteen Beams will not apply because it's basically Roxas's Limit Break. Duel Stance also will not apply because of how difficult it is to translate it over into narration.)

A Good Other: It should also be noted that it has been stated and shown in canon that Roxas can do anything Sora can, so it may be possible for Roxas to learn other moves and abilities that Sora knows given time and training.

Current State:
It is very important to note that as of the point that Roxas is entering the game, he is not at full power. A lot of his strength has been sapped by Xion through the connection they share through Sora. Xion is a replica of Sora and has been absorbing Sora's memories, and Roxas is Sora's Nobody. If she continues to drain power from Roxas (and she cannot control this), then Roxas will continue to get weaker and weaker, leading to unknown but undoubtedly unpleasant consequences.
